NetMesh InfoGrid LID

NetMesh InfoGrid LID is NetMesh's implementation of a collection of light-weight digital identity protocols in a single, easy-to-use and interoperability-tested package.

Identity — the ability to recognize people, and software applications on the network, and to safely interact with them — is a key component of Web 2.0, and correspondingly has found a lot of attention lately. Unlike more heavy-weight approaches, identity for Web 2.0 is generally based on the following ideas:

• Users can pick and choose from a variety of identity providers. They can also run their own identity provider if they wish to. (see also mylid.net)
• Users pick the URL(s) that they wish to use as their identities, and use one of those whenever they need to identify themselves on the internet. NetMesh InfoGrid LID makes sure that nobody can impersonate others, and that personal information is only shared with the consent and explicit approval of the user.
• Users are in control of their identity on-line. They determine where to use it, and what information to share with whom.

NetMesh InfoGrid LID enables developers to quickly accomplish one or more of the following goals:

• to allow their users to identify themselves at their site with their identity URL, such as their blog's URL or mylid.net URL.
• to obtain up-to-date information about their users directly from their LID URL, subject to approval by the user.
• to avoid developing a user registration and management module for their website on their own, and instead wish to use third-party code that performs this function already;
• to create a hosted LID service, hosting LID personal digital identities for their own customers, similar to mylid.net.

License

NetMesh InfoGrid LID is provided under a dual licensing model that meets the requirements of both open-source and commercial projects:

• NetMesh InfoGrid LID is available free of charge, under a Sleepycat-style license, to open source projects.
• Developers who, for whatever reasons, want to keep some of their source code proprietary can obtain NetMesh InfoGrid LID under an alternate, proprietary license that does not require them to open their own source code.

NetMesh also offers support.

NetMesh InfoGrid LID is available on the following platforms:

• Java 1.3 and higher
• PHP 4.3 and higher
• Perl 5.8 and higher

All major operating systems and hardware platforms are supported.
